Why We Use A
Composting Toilet System
The biggest single reason is recycling. We strive to recycle all our waste. And the greatest amount of waste we produce is our own. By collecting it in a bucket privy and then storing it in containers to compost, we can eventually add it to the garden beds. This is particularly important as we strive to convert this hard clay soil to something capable of growing our food.
A second reason is water. Many parts of this country and the world are facing increasing problems with having adequate water. One of the factors contributing to that shortage is the use of water to flush toilets, sending that water back to the ocean rather than being available for other uses.
We use peat moss in our bucket privy to help eliminate odors as well as contribute to the composting action. We also try to have room deodorizers placed nearby in the bathroom. Still, we know that some guests have problems with this. And we hope that if you are one of those, that you will feel free to discuss your discomfort with us to see if we can help alleviate it.

Our Showers
Although we have a gravity shower that can be used, very few residents or guests bother to use it, finding a simple bucket of hot water easier. We also have solar showers that can be used in the summer.
